Rabies & International Pet Transport

Rabies is a viral infection of the nervous system that causes acute encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in warm-blooded animals. It is transmitted by a bite from an infected animal.

Rabies is known to be present on all continents except Antarctica. Each country falls within one of three categories: Rabies Free, Rabies Controlled, and Rabies Infected.

The categories of the pet’s import and export countries influence the policies and requirements. These categories must be known prior to transport. For the pet to be recognized in that category, they must have lived in that country for at least six (6) months, or four (4) months born there.
